Adam “MCA” Yauch (Beastie Boys) NYC Memorial Park Defaced
Is this what a Donald Trump presidency looks like? Since the Republican was elected on November 9, hate crimes have seemingly increased in frequency and people are getting bolder in their support of the President-elect. On Friday (November 18), swastikas and the words, “Go Trump,” were spray painted on fixtures inside Adam “MCA” Yauch‘s memorial park in New York City, sparking outrage among not only Brooklyn Heights residents, but also Beastie Boys and Hip Hop fans alike.
Several people took to Twitter to express their frustrations and fears of anti-Semitic rhetoric becoming the “new normal.” The New School in Manhattan was also privy to hate-filled vandalism earlier this week, according to Gothamist.
City Councilman Brad Lander tweeted a photo, adding, “Yet more hatred & anti-Semitism from Trump supporters.” Lander says the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force and the Parks Department were on-site immediately, and the equipment will be repainted tonight (November 18).
As one-third of the Beastie Boys, the famously Jewish MCA was instrumental in pushing Hip Hop culture forward during a time when it was still relatively new. Sadly, Yauch lost his battle with cancer in 2012 at the age of 47. For someone who was all about peace and unity toward the end of his life, this is the antithesis of what he’d want for his community.
